The term “B-double” comes from the fact that the fifth wheel and kingpin coupling is also referred to as a “B coupling”. The design was pioneered in Australia by Bob Woodward, who designed a truck with a standard 40-foot trailer at the back and a tri-axle at the rear. In 1981, the country’s first 17m B-double went into operation in Western Australia, with Victoria, South Australia and Queensland quickly following suit.
